Crime & Punishment: Universal Laws Needed

By Mark Dement

Crime and punishment. It sounds easy doesn't it? A person does a crime and they get punished. But, wait a minute. Why is our legal system a complete maze for the American people?

In Texas, a person is convicted of murder and they get life in prison. While a similar crime in Oregon, the murderer gets 7 years.

But...it doesn't end there. In every courthouse in America there are judges that can be liberal or conservative in their interpretation of the law.

Then there are the Federal laws. Their prosecutors tend to be on the strict side and for good reason. It is because they have been the fabric of what has kept our country together all these years.

There are laws nationally that have been adopted in most states. Like the 3 times you're out for life laws. And those have worked well for all our citizens in helping keep down major crimes by criminals who know if they get caught they never, ever will get out of prison.

In the name of justice for the people, don't we deserve to cut through the heap of legal mumbo jumbo and adopt laws that apply to every single person in America? All the same laws...all the same punishment, for every state in our great nation.

The enormity of making these changes is humongous. But
where is justice anyway when the law becomes fluid?

The nationalization of our legal system flattens out the justice field. The legal system would be cut and dried, in black and white, for all Americans.

A commission of recognized judges should be appointed to work on a plan to make laws for the entire nation.

Then...justice may be served for all the people...all the same, all the time, for liberty and justice for all.

Most all of us believe in democracy, the free enterprise system and all that is good. We support the Constitution, yet, somehow we need to get a handle on our legal system to make us a stronger and better nation.

Amen. I agree that all States, and counties within the States, should have equal punishment for equal crimes. In PA, Clearfield County to be exact, many criminals have the same exact crime as another and get a lighter sentence because they either had a paid lawyer instead of a public defender or because they have more influence because of their name in the community. It's unfair.
